Abstract: 59SiO2–36CaO–5P2O5 (mol%) as58Sbioactiveglassnanotubesweresuccessfullypreparedusingacoaxial electrospinning process,loadedwithIbuprofen(IBU),andcharacterizedforin-vitrodrugreleaseprop- erties. Polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)wasexploitedtomanipulatetheprecursorsolutionsviscosity.The influence ofPVPconcentrationon fiber formationanditsmorphologywereinvestigated.Theacceptable formation wasachievedeventuallybydissolving8gPVPin10mlethanol.Bioactiveglassnanotubes werecharacterizedby field emissionscanningelectronmicroscopy(FE-SEM),X-raypowderdiffraction (XRD), simultaneousthermalanalysis(STA-TG/DTA),nitrogensorptionporosimetry(BET),Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy(FT-IR),thermogravimetricanalysis(TGA),ultraviolet-visibleabsorption spectroscopy(UV–vis), andenergydispersivespectroscopyanalysis(EDS).Accordingly,FT-IRandTG analysesindicatedthesynthesisofbioactiveglassnanotubeshasasatisfactoryabilitytostoreIBUdueto hydrogenbondingbetweendrugandglass.Furthermore,in-vitrodrugreleasetestsverified thatsamples of drug-loadedglassnanotubeswerebasedonKorsmeyer-PeppasmodelandFickiandiffusionrelease mechanism. Thesurfaceof58Sglassnanotubeswasfullycrystallized,mostlybyhydroxylapatitephase and partiallybytetracalciumphosphatelayerafterimmersioninSBFfor14days.
